This were the last words said by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
And, during this period of the year (at least in the Northen part of the world), that’s something we can say every day 🙂
Here is a lettered version with gouache and gold leaf on hemp paper. The letters are 1.7cm high (except the M & the H of course).
Yesterday, it was my wife’s birthday.
I didn’t know what I could give her so…
As you can imagine from my fingers on the picture, the pebble is about 2 centimeters large.
The pattern is inspired by the decoration of the Visconti’s Hours.
To change my mind a bit, I just made a small gilded versal on a pebble.
The patterns are inspired by those found in a 12th century manuscript and I will teach the construction of this kind of initials (but not on a pebble) in March 2023 in an online course in English that will be broadcasted by
the gentle penman
It’s really been a very long time since I’ve inflicted one of my filigree lettering on you. Probably because I took a break and devoted myself to other elements of calligraphy.
So here is a two-tone V with filigrees (a little different from what I usually do) and my unavoidable little gilded dots.
Today is my wife’s birthday.
As I didn’t know what to give her, I started to create a new currency (kisses) and I started with a big banknote, 1 million !
Cashable only with me and in nature 🙂
The photo is printed (yes, I know, I should have done it by hand but that’s one of the many things I don’t know how to do).
Gold leaf for the control strip and the dot of the i, embossing for the number, everything else is done in watercolor, different dilutions of Payne’s grey.
I wish you all a very happy new year 2022, health, happiness and calligraphy 🙂
And here is an A as in Appy New Year! 😉
A little filigree initial with a few gold dots to delight your eyes during this holiday season.
These filigrees will be the subject of my next online course in English on January 22 & 23.
It is often difficult to find compositions to enhance a short sentence or a single word.
Luckily, there are solutions!
You are a star !
I’m offering a class on puzzle versals and how to use them for small compositions.

And don’t forget, we are all stars!
There are a few seats left for the next online course in English about filigrees on September 25th and 26th.

If you speak French, there’s another course on October 9th & 10th.
For those of you who are not on instagram, I am currently participating in a little challenge launched by a group of Swedish women.
It’s about calligraphy words or expressions in Swedish. Here are my first realizations.
tindra which means “twinkle”
äntligen fredag which means “thanks god it’s friday”
fika for “getting together over a cup of coffee”
